Simplicity 2603 - The Sleeveless Top - Part 1

I'm really excited about this tank as it's the first shirt I'll be making with a FBA since starting the Bust Adjustments class over on PatternReview. In just the first few lessons I've learned a lot. Lesson 3 covers a traditional FBA with side darts, and Sarah Veblen briefly (very briefly) discusses a FBA on a shirt without any side darts. What hasn't been covered is the rotating of darts and that's what I wanted to do with this top.

Remember, this is Simplicity 2603. It has a sleeveless top that has been reviewed many times and I think they've almost all been positive. The top has gathers along the front neckline with a wide neckband attached to the neckline. It looks like it would be a comfortable, practical tank with the potential to become a TNT.

Here is the pattern with FBA (before cutting out).

The only problem was that I didn't want a top with side darts and gathers at the front. So, I asked about this on the class board - Sarah suggested that instead of opening up a dart towards the seam that I open it towards the neckline and have more gathers. Or that I have the side seam darts and the gathers (what I wanted to avoid). Now, I'm not an expert - far from it. But if, I open the dart towards the neckline, I didn't think that I would get the length needed to go over my bust and that my hemline would be uneven when looked at from the side.

This is my pattern after I rotated the dart - I just kinda winged this part and I hope that I did it correctly. I did go back and re-draw the cutting lines. I guess that I'll find out since I've got the fabric cut out this morning and am going to go sew as soon as I hit publish.

That was the extent of yesterday's play for me. About 11:00 a friend came over and did our hair for us. That usually takes awhile.

We had a Youth Rally in Bentonia, MS. yesterday evening. We has a great evening. The evangelist spoke about wasting the potential that God has given us. That we shouldn't be asking God to get us out of scrapes that we've put ourselves in but rather asking how/what we can do for Him and using the potential that He gave us. It really was an inspiring message.

Anyway, we arrived home about 1:30 this morning. I was so tired, that I just told Rachael to go to bed and I would take her hair down in the morning (I had taken mine done with one hand while driving in an effort to stay awake). This is what I pulled out of her hair this morning. Hannah is old enough to take down her own hair.

It was totally worth all those bobby pins though. Look at this fabulous BIG hair-do and the grin on her face.

What you did with rotating the dart is exactly right. :-) But to address your specific concern:

"Now, I'm not an expert - far from it. But if, I open the dart towards the neckline, I didn't think that I would get the length needed to go over my bust and that my hemline would be uneven when looked at from the side"

If you had started with a slash to the neckline instead of the side, you would've still needed to spread and add length like you did for the side slash, or else the pattern wouldn't lay flat. (You know you've got things right when the pattern tissue/paper lays flat.)

well debbie beat me to the punch on the dart rotation so you have that figured out now! Basically, you already added the length on the original FBA, and as you saw once you rotated, the length didn't change (the added length is that part of the center front that got a horizontal cut and then was dropped down however much it needed to make the hem even again).

If you think about the side-dart, you were going to sew that up anyway, so there isn't any added length there. The added length is all at the center front.

As for that hair, Wah HOOOO! That's some big, cute hair (and one happy little girl).
