Schooldays Coat - Lining

To make the lining, I pretty much just followed the instructions, except for setting in the sleeves. I hate setting in sleeves after the side seams have been sewn. A friend from many years ago told me that there is rarely a need to set in a sleeve in the round. She always set in her sleeves flat. I try to learn from others and since she had been sewing for over 50 years at that point? I learned her technique.

Instead of sewing two parallel lines of gathering stitches and then pulling the gathering stitches up, Mrs. Joanne used what she called "crowding". I Googled for a good explanation of this and even searched on YouTube. Admittedly, I didn't search too hard or for very long. I do have a toddler in this house, remember? Anyway, I thought it would be easier to make a video than to try a written description:

After sewing the armhole seam, use a pressing ham to eliminate any puckers. If you know this by another name, let me know!

When adding the sleeves, I realized that this coat has a slight forward sleeve. This isn't mentioned in the notes but is marked on the pattern. Don't be like me! Pay attention to the markings. ;)

The finished lining with buttons for the removable insulated lining and velcro (on one side only) for closing the coat.

I also put the hood together, making a slight alteration. I didn't want the lining to come all the way to the edge of the hood, so I straightened the seams on the pattern edge, and then cut my lining an inch shorted and my corduroy an inch longer (at the edge that will be next to the face) than the pattern piece. I followed the assembly instructions as indicated in the pattern.

When folding the hood lining into the outside hood, 1" of the corduroy should fold to the inside. I top-stitched right along the edge where the corduroy and the lining meet (1").

I'm hoping to get the coat shell sewn up today.

You have been making great progress on this coat! I think you'll learn something from the fba class. I know I did :).

Have fun!
