I've been on a bit of an odyssey lately. I've been increasingly tired of wearing the same three outfits to church and coming home to stare at fabric that cost a small fortune or going into town for chores and looking like something the cat dragged in with my t-shirts with holes at the belly-button. Ugh. But... it's the same small fortune that also (kind of) keeps me from sewing all my fabric up. I don't want to waste the money I've spent and the fabric that I love so much by making something that I'll never wear.
So, I figure it's time to really get down to basics:
So, I figure it's time to really get down to basics:
- What do I really like to wear? Ummm, for everyday that would be a t-shirt and a denim skirt. For church? A knit shirt and a dressy skirt. Sounds boring, but that's what I'm comfortable in. I've tried to love jackets but meh, I just don't care for them. I do love cardigans. For skirts, something long. At 5'0", skirts must be at my knees or at my ankles (or slightly above). Because of my convictions about modesty, I always wear my skirts at a longer length. Anywhere around my calves just looks dowdy.
- What colors look best on me? Earlier this summer, I had my colors done. I was told to wear jewel tones, that browns, blacks, grays, navy and off-white are good for my neutrals. Good thing - that's what I like best.
- How do I alter patterns so that they'll fit and I'll actually wear them? That's a good question. I'm still reading up on that and trying to teach myself. I did sign up for the Bust Adjustment class over on PatternReview. Juli of The Happy Homemaker Redux recently took this class and did recommend it. I'm taking her at her word.

I think you're right...if I were 11" shorter and white we could be twins! I've been searching for a personal style too.
Have fun with the bust adjustment class, Amy! Get your questions answered and do the exercises and it will be worth the $$.
I have the same choices for skirt lengths and end up going with the long too (my convictions aren't so much about modesty as about the belief that no one needs to be exposed to my knees... for their own safety). I think a tea lenght works pretty well.
I hope you plan to document your exploration on this. I'm always struggling with style-and-fabric-use issues (for the same reasons) and I love to see what other people are mulling over.
And definitely a good grasp of FBA's is really really helpful in making you more comfortable with pattern fitting. So yay!!
